Borussia Dortmund will speak with Ilkay Gundogan over the next few weeks to discuss his future with the club, reports Goal.com.
The midfield star, who has struggled with injury this season, has attracted interest from some of Europe's elite clubs in recent time and has been linked with a £24 million summer switch away from Dortmund.
Both Manchester United and Barcelona are reportedly interested in the player's services, but Dortmund appear ready to keep him in the Bundesliga.
Despite his injury problems, the German outfit look ready to secure a new deal with the star and hope to make a decision regarding a new deal within the next few weeks.
Speaking to Sky Sport News HD, Dortmund's chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said: "The fact that we would like to extend the contract of Ilkay Gundogan is clear. But there's always more to it.
"We also have a certain degree of respect for his long medical history, which of course has charged him and is why he wants to look further into how his body can be kept fit.
"This will certainly not be a never-ending story. We will use the next few weeks together to make a decision and we are in contact with Ilkay and his family, who also advise him."
It remains to be seen as to whether Barcelona and Manchester United do step up their interest in the midfielder in the near future.
However, with Dortmund appearing keen to keep the star at the club, Manchester United boss David Moyes may yet have to look elsewhere for new recruits.
Fans of the Red Devils will certainly be hoping the club add competition in the midfield department this summer, with the middle of the park having been a problem area for the Premier League champions in recent time.
