MLS have released their first goal of the week winner of the season and is it ever a cracker.

Making his debut in the game, Sebastian Fernandez of the Vancouver Whitecaps opened his account in America in style to win over the fans and the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week voters.

Fernández claimed the initial award of the 2014 season on Friday for his game-winning rocket in the Whitecaps' 4-1 rout of a Thierry Henry- less New York Red Bulls side.

The Uruguayan's stunning strike, which came in the 49th minute of the game, claimed a little more than 39 percent of the vote - an award open to vote by the general public.

The 24-year old former Danubio player collects the ball from forward Darren Mattocks and drives forward before unleashing a spectacular strike into the top corner of Luis Robles' net.

The midfielder also picked up man of the match honours for his display in the thrashing in which Scottish forward Kenny Miller scored twice and Pedro Morales finished off great work from Nigel Reo-Coker.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a consolation for the Red Bulls who sorely missed their talismanic French captain.

Mauro Diaz of FC Dallas came in second in the vote. His free kick in a 3-2 victory over Montreal, was not enough to beat out Fernandez, who won by quite a distance.
