Manchester United made yet another check on Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay last week.
Representatives from Manchester United saw Garay put in a marvellous performance against Tottenham in the Europa League last Thursday.
The 27-year-old Argentinian international is said to be high up on David Moyes’ summer transfer wish-list.
Moyes will have to sign a centre-back to replace the outgoing Nemanja Vidic at the end of the season and Garay is said to be the leading candidate to fill the gap left by Manchester United’s club captain.
Garay failed to make the grade at Real Madrid during his three-year spell in Spain - but has managed to resurrect his career with Portuguese outfit Benfica.
Manchester United are said to be long-term admirers of Garay but have previously failed to conclude a deal to sign the defender.
However reports suggest Manchester United could finally land the £18million-rated centre-back by stepping up their chase for the former Real Madrid defender at the end of the season.
