A senior Manchester United player was involved in a furious dressing room bust-up with David Moyes and his coaching staff following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Influential Manchester United fanzine Red Issue have revealed that the player in question branded Moyes “clueless” and his backroom staff “useless” before storming out of the home dressing room.
Although these reports are currently unconfirmed, they would hardly come as a major surprise given Manchester United’s lacklustre performances under Moyes, who is under huge pressure following a dismal debut campaign with the Red Devils. Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat leaves the reigning Premier League champions down in seventh position, 18 points off league leaders Chelsea, with nine matches left to play.
Red Issue have also revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson, who urged the Manchester United board to appoint former Everton manager Moyes in the first place, is considering making a stunning return to football management if the Glazer family decide to part company with the beleaguered Scot this summer.
It’s believed that Moyes still has the support of the Glazer family for the time being, but that could change if these latest reports are accurate. The Red Devils’ American owners may also decide to implement a change unless they see a dramatic turnaround in fortunes between now and the end of the season.
As well as the prospect of missing out on European football altogether, Manchester United are also on the brink of being knocked out of this season’s Champions League campaign at the last 16 stage. Moyes was at a loss to explain how his side slumped to an abysmal 2-0 defeat in Piraeus last month - and his fate could effectively be sealed if he fails to mastermind a much-improved display in the second leg.
The under-fire Scot then takes his side to West Ham on Saturday, three days before Tuesday night’s Premier League clash against local rivals Manchester City.
