Juan Mata has revealed that he is angry at not being able to give Manchester United fans what they deserved during yesterday’s 3-0 humbling at home to Liverpool.
Writing on his blog on United’s official website the Spaniard bemoaned the result, and said that it made him feel “mad” that he and his team-mates couldn’t give the travelling fans something to cheer about. Two Steven Gerrard penalties and a cool Luis Suarez finish ensured that United’s season slumped to new lows in the game at Old Trafford, and David Moyes’ men now sit in 7th place in the Premier League, with only nine matches left to play.
Despite a dreary season the United fans backed their team up until the last minute yesterday, and Mata believes that they deserved more than what they got. The January signing wrote: “There are no words to describe your support in the stadium.
“In games like yesterday it makes me mad not being able to give you what you deserve. I know there is nothing I can say right now, but at least I want you to know how I feel.”
The defeat to Liverpool means United face a virtually impossible task to secure Champions League football for next season by way of a top four finish in the league. With Everton and Tottenham both fighting for fourth place, as well as Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City involved in one of the closest title races in recent memory, it looks incredibly unlikely that Mata and co. will be able to make up the difference and muscle their way into contention for a European place before the end of the campaign.
