Former England international Danny Mills has told BBC Sport that Manchester United will have to wait 10 years before they will be able to regain their Premier League crown.

Having won the league comfortably last season under Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes has had a baptism of fire in the manager's position with the defending champions, languishing in seventh place and a whopping 18 points behind table toppers Chelsea.

On Sunday the Red Devils suffered arguably their most humiliating defeat yet, a 3-0 home reverse against rivals Liverpool in which captain Nemanja Vidic was sent off.

It could have been a lot worse for United too, as Steven Gerrard missed a penalty and the hosts only mustered one shot on target, despite the attacking quartet of Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj and Robin van Persie all starting.

Mills told BBC's Match of the Day 3 that "it could be 10 years before they win the title again."

He added: "The whole rebuilding process is going to take three or four years at least. Then you have got to think Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool will strengthen - and Tottenham and Arsenal could possibly strengthen as well."

It is quite a statement from Mills, who has 19 England caps, but it looks fair. United have not failed to reach the Champions League since 1993, but they are 12 points off the top four this year, with their only hope of qualifying surely to win the competition outright this season.

However, they find themselves facing the exit door after a humiliating 2-0 loss in Greece against Olympiakos.

"David Moyes has not won the league. He has not won a trophy," added Mills.

"If he had a good team he might get back in the top four and Champions League, but I think that they are a long way off competing and winning the title."

"Going into Manchester United, you had to build on massive success and that is where David Moyes has found it difficult."

Despite the news that Robin van Persie announced he wanted to stay at Old Trafford this weekend, he cut a forlorn and isolated figure on Sunday, and Mills thinks his time at Old Trafford is nearing an end.

"Van Persie doesn't look like he wants to be there and wants to leave," said Mills.
"You look at his body language and he doesn't look happy there does he? Something is not right with him."
