Manchester United defender Rafael da Silva went to bed at 5am the night before the Liverpool clash - after he was in the hospital at the birth of his child.

According to The Mirror, the Red Devils full-back only had a few hours sleep before the lunch time battle at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Manchester United had a nightmare afternoon against Liverpool as they were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Brendan Rodgers' side.

And Rafael also had a day to forget as he gave away the first of Liverpool's three penalties at the Theatre of Dreams, with the Brazilian ace also lucky not to get sent off.

Questions may now be raised as to whether the full-back was in the right frame of mind for such a crucial Premier League clash.

Rafael's attentions will now turn to Manchester United's Champions League Round of 16 second leg clash with Olympiacos on Wednesday.

The Red Devils head into the game at Old Trafford 2-0 behind and will be desperate to reach the quarter finals of Europe's elite competition.
