Manchester United's plans to recruit Real Madrid star Fabio Coentrao have taken a hit as both Chelsea and AC Milan are ready to join the fray this summer.
According to Calciomercato, Jose Mourinho is keen to be reunited with Coentrao, whom he managed at the Santiago Bernabeu before returning to take over at Chelsea this season. However, the report also claims Milan are keen on the Portugal international as they look to rebuild under new manager Clarence Seedorf.
Manchester United have long been linked with a move for Coentrao and reportedly missed out on a deadline day deal for him this January. The interest from Chelsea and Milan will be a worry to the Old Trafford hierarchy as this season has not gone well for David Moyes' side and they look certain to miss out on Champions League football.
Chelsea will be confident of beating Manchester United to the left-back if it comes down to persuading him either way, especially as confidence at the soon to be deposed Premier League champions continues to fall with every disappointing result. Mourinho will feel similarly about going up against Milan, who are in the process of rebuilding after financial constraints limited their ability to spend.
Both Premier League sides look as though they will need to be recruiting at left-back come the summer, as their veteran options have been tipped to move on. Ashley Cole is now second choice at left-back behind Cesar Azpilicueta and is reportedly ready to end his Stamford Bridge career come the summer.
Patrice Evra has also been tipped to depart come the end of the season when his current contract expires. Manchester United's long-serving left-back, often one of their most consistent players, is reportedly considering following club captain Nemanja Vidic to Inter Milan.
