Manchester United’s heroes from tonight’s 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in the Champions League have been slammed by former team-mate Darron Gibson for not congratulating David de Gea on his match-defining double save.
The Spaniard repelled his opponents twice in rapid succession during the first-half to prevent them from scoring what could have been a tie-changing goal. At the time United were 1-0 up on the night, but had De Gea conceded they would have needed another three to go through due to the away goals rule. And former Red Devil Gibson took to Twitter to pan the fact that not one of United’s on-field players gave the young goalkeeper the recognition he deserved.
According to the Express, Gibson Tweeted: “2 great saves and not 1 player gives him a high 5 or a pat on the back!"
Of course only minutes after De Gea’s splendid saves Van Persie added a second, which gave United the momentum going into the halftime break. The Dutchman then completed his hat-trick with a free-kick in the second half and David Moyes’ side hung on to clinch the tie 3-2, and secure their place in the quarter-finals.
Gibson played a total of nine times in European competition for United, but was sold on to Everton in January 2012.
