The story goes well for Michael Sam. The story only, though.
Tomorrow, Michael Sam gets the opportunity to show how good he is and improve his draft value, as Missouri host their Pro Day.
Sam, who has impressed in Missouri didn't quite make the same impression at the Combine and needs to use tomorrow to up his draft prospects.
A quick recap: Michael Sam revealed shortly before the Scouting Combine that he was gay. Cue masses of PR and headlines along with some very liberal and some very appalling stories of how this will be handled by potential teammates.
However his combine performance wasn't up to the task of matching the coverage and he failed to impress many experts and scouts.
For a defensive lineman, and arguably one who has done well at Missouri, he failed to show the explosive speed and strength, coming up as quite small comported to what teams might want.
There are some positives from the combine as apparently, despite his recorded one, he was consistently quick and showed most of his pace in short distances, perfect for his position.
We shall see tomorrow if he can cut the mustard and up his stock. It's very doable for him to move up to maybe a third round pick, but unless he severely impresses he won't go very far.
It will be a shame though as for all of the progressive movement Sam has instigated and the much needed talks and revelation of ignorance in sports about homosexuality, he's also a damn good defensive lineman.
The combine isn't everything. We know that, it's rarely given us the next superstars so clearly as it is supposed to. Sam will be judged more on what he did in the SEC conference, arguably the best and hardest of the college leagues.
Sam accounted for 11.5 sacks in that league and 19 tackles that went for a loss of yards. It's no small feat which is why this story is still going.
Everyone knows that within all the talk, hype or whatever you want to call it, Michael Sam has the potential to be a terrific athlete and a very useful defensive lineman. Let's just hope he shows it.
