The San Francisco 49ers may have just brought in Blaine Gabbert to challenge Colin Kaepernick at the quarterback position, but it looks like head coach Jim Harbaugh isn't done there.
As the Sacramento Bee pointed out today, the Niners have been checking out several quarterbacks that are available in this years draft already, and still aren't stopping.
"On Wednesday as coach Jim Harbaugh flew across the country to watch Virginia Tech’s Logan Thomas while the team’s quarterbacks coach stayed closer to home for David Fales’ workout," the Bee pointed out.
Fales has been quietly impressing every scout and coach that has gone to watch him and was equally as impressive yesterday when only one of his 52 passes went astray, furthering the belief that he is one of the most accurate passers that is available.
At San Diego State last year, Fales threw for 66% and ended the season with 33 touchdowns. His stats last year weren't as impressive as he did in 2012 - when he had 33 TD's with only 9 INTs and a 72.5% completion.
Logan Thomas is a different prospect entirely to Fales. The Virginia Tech man comes in at 6ft 6in but his accuracy was poor throwing for 16 TD's and 13 INTs.
Harbaugh also attended Eastern Illinois' QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s pro day earlier this month and went through a private workout with the FCS play caller who a lot of experts are very high on and could well sneak into the first round/early second.
The Jacksonville Jaguars finally gave up on Blaine Gabbert last Tuesday when he joined San Francisco for a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft and a possible conditional pick in 2015.
Colin Kaepernick is coming into his contract year and wants a lot of money. If talks go badly then there is a possibility he could leave or be franchise tagged.
It seems that Harbaugh and the Niners are preparing for this worst case scenario.
