Barcelona want deal for Manchester United target

Barcelona are aiming to beat Manchester United to the summer acquisition of Mats Hummels, as they look to strengthen their back line ahead of next season’s campaign.

According to French newspaper Le 10 Sport, which relays information from Spanish source Sport, the German international is just one name on a list which includes a host of European centre-backs. Hummels has already been rumoured to be edging towards a move to the Nou Camp if the decision lies in his hands, and so Gerardo Martino may well be set to land his man.

Barcelona are keen to replace long-term club talisman Carles Puyol, and Hummels’ experience at the top level makes him the ideal candidate. However the Catalan giants are sure to face stiff competition for his signature, both from current club Borussia Dortmund and other rival suitors.

United have maintained a long running interest in the 25-year-old and David Moyes is unlikely to want to lose out on on a top name without a stern fight. Then of course there’s Jurgen Klopp’s desire to minimise the loss of his side’s best players.

With Mario Gotze having already been sold on to Bayern Munich, and Robert Lewandowski scheduled to follow him, as well as Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan heavily linked with moves away, there isn’t much reason to suggest he would be willing to part with Hummels if he could at all help it.
