Last year's finalists Benfica stopped Tottenham's path in the Europa League for this season. Obviously, they've learned their lesson after losing from Chelsea in last year's final and managed to thrive under the pressure to seal the win over their north London opponents.
Being in front after winning in the first game, Benfica had a lot easier task at their home stadium, the Estadio da Luz.
On the other hand, Tottenham failed to make a good impression on their fans at White Hart Lane. 3-1 was the score to the Portuguese team in the first leg match, mostly thanks to Luisao, Benfica's captain, who got the ball past Hugo Lloris twice.
Although Hotspur were knocked out of the competition, Nacer Chadli was their man of the match in the second leg, scoring two goals in two minutes to overturn the game after Benfica got in front. Luckily for the home team, they were awarded a penalty in the last minute of the match. Lima had no problem with scoring and making it a draw.
Sherwood's team hasn't justified huge transfer funds, spent after the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. Seven players brought into the team haven't fulfilled the expectations for this season's competitions.
