With the quarter-final line up for the Champions League oozing quality, Chelsea and Manchester United - the two English representatives - face an uphill struggle if they are to progress to the last four of the coveted competition.
United have drawn holders Bayern Munich, who are in imperious form in Germany, sitting pretty at the top, a whopping 23 points clear of Borussia Dortmund in second place.
Bayern dismantled Arsenal with relative ease in the last 16 and United’s poor form this season will see Bayern go into the tie as strong favourites to reach the semi-final stage for a third season in a row.
Chelsea are the other English side in the quarter-finals and will face Paris Saint-Germain. The French champions boast a star-studded line up, but Jose Mourinho’s men will fancy their chances against a side who have never gone beyond the last eight of the competition.
PSG have an array of attacking talent and the classy Zlatan Ibrahimović will be hoping to add to his already impressive tally of ten Champions League goals this season, a number than only Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo can better with a mesmeric 13 to his name.
The remaining two fixtures sees a repeat of last seasons semi-final, with Real Madrid facing Borussia Dortmund and an all Spanish affair as Barcleona host surprise La Liga package Atletico Madrid.
Real and Ronaldo will be hoping to abolish the memories of last season’s semi-final defeat at the hands of Jürgen Klopp’s Dortmund, when the departing Robert Lewandowski hit four past Madrid to send his side to a Wembley final.
Barcelona will fancy their chances of reaching a remarkable seventh-straight Champions League semi-final, but will be wary of the threat posed by Diego Simeone’s Atletico side, who sit a point above the Catalan outfit in La Liga.
With Bayern, Barcelona and Real Madrid - the so-called European giants - all avoiding each other in the quarter finals of the Champions League, the stage has been set for what could be a magnificent showdown to Europe’s showpiece competition.
