Mercer show no mercy with Duke upset

Mercer make progress
Mercer make progress.

Yes that did just happen.

Mercer continued the run of shocks in the early stages of March Madness as they overcame Duke 78-71 Friday afternoon.

Duke came in as number three seeds and were expected to progress with help from hyped draft prospect Jabari Parker.

But the experience of Mercer, who started five seniors today, shone through as they clinched the game with some clutch plays in the final minutes of this round two March Madness contest.

The game ended with a 20-8 run for the Bears as Coach K's side failed to respond when it mattered.

The number 14 seeds secured their first ever NCAA Tournament win, and undoubtedly the biggest shock so far with the tournament in it's second day.

Jakob Gollon hit 20 points as the Atlantic Sun champions shot 56 percent in all.

Parker shot just 4-15 from the field, finishing with 14 points as Duke exited at the first hurdle for the second time in three years.

Mercer progress to face either Tennessee or U-Mass in the next round after a truly historic victory that has got the entire nation applauding the players led by Bob Hoffman.
