1: No Football team until last 2013

That's right. Mercer University had no football team at all until the end of 2013. Not even a non-competitive team.

But they do now, and the play play for the Pioneer Football League which is only just expanding into the FCS conferences.

Basically the league they play in has only just become eligible to compete in the college playoffs.

That's worked out quite well for Mercer. They used to have a football team though.

In fact Mercer played football from around the turn of the century until the advent of the Second World War.

Until 2013, their last game was competed in 1941 and now the 72 year hiatus has ended and a brand new 10,000 capacity stadium was built.

They are due to play in the southern conference in 2014
