Paul Scholes has warned David Moyes his Manchester United team must challenge on all fronts if he is to avoid the sack at Old Trafford.

According to, the 39-year-old - who retired alongside Sir Alex Ferguson last summer - is sympathetic to the former Everton boss' situation, but insisted that the level of performance from the current crop of Red Devils stars has to improve next season.

With Manchester United sitting seventh in the Premier League table, 21 points behind leaders Chelsea, and 12 off the Champions League places, Moyes has endured a difficult debut campaign at Old Trafford.

An impressive 3-0 victory in the Champions League last-16 second leg against Olympiakos in midweek provided him with a brief reprieve, after booking Manchester United's place in the quarter-finals where they'll now face holders Bayern Munich.

However, a European challenge alone will not be enough to satisfy the club's board or supporters long-term, with Scholes pointing to the Premier League and FA Cup as equally important trophies to challenge for.

"I don’t think [it's a case of a certain number of seasons], you just give it to him until it’s right," responded the Manchester United legend when asked how long he thinks Moyes will get in the job.

"You know, results are supposed to decide if he’s there, when he’s there, at United you’ve got to challenge for the league title, there’s no doubt about that, you’ve got to challenge for the FA Cup, and you’ve got to challenge for the Champions League, and if you’re not doing that year on year, whoever’s in charge won’t be there."
