Three midfield solutions for Manchester United

Having spent last summer being linked with a host of talent, who will Manchester United's midfield gain this Summer?

Last summer they were linked with the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera but eventually could only seal the arrival of Marouane Fellaini.

This season the side as a hole have struggled for form, but a lot of attention has been on that midfield that many feel was not adequately strengthened last year.

Tom Cleverley has received criticism throughout his United career, while Michael Carrick isn't getting any younger and Darren Fletcher continues his comeback.

With that in mind, here are three possible signings that Manchester United would benefit from:

1: İlkay Gündoğan

İlkay Gündoğan has remained a common name when discussing potential summer moves for the upcoming transfer window. With financially supreme giants like Real Madrid and Barcelona on the look out, Manchester United will have to act efficiently to earn the services of this terrific German midfielder.

Gündoğan's ability to control the center of the field is excellent which would make him a significant addition to the United squad. Manchester United urgently need a midfielder that can contribute to their performances in the way that the irreplaceable Paul Scholes did. İlkay Gündoğan would introduce a similar style of play.

2: Luka Modrić

Although Modrić has been doing brilliantly with Madrid, the right price tag would surely persuade the Spanish giants to consider letting the Croatian return to England.

Modrić acts as a fantastic distributor, releasing strikers with first-rate through passes. Undoubtedly, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie would appreciate Modrić's assistance.

Modrić could also be viewed as a solid replacement for the aging midfielders in the United squad. With Carrick and Fletcher growing older, David Moyes must sign players that will improve the future as well as the present. Luka Modrić would surely help the English Champions.

3: Xabi Alonso

Unfortunately for Manchester United, this looks like an extremely unlikely transfer. However, if United somehow managed to pull off this purchase, their midfield problems would surely come to an immediate end.

Alonso has continued to prove himself as one of the world's top midfielders, dominating Madrid's play with his sensational vision and breathtaking passing ability.

Aside from fitting perfectly into a phenomenally talented Madrid squad, Alonso's relationship with Manchester United's top rivals Liverpool would surely affect his decision to return to the Premier League. This is clearly the most unlikely of these three options, but there's no point in completely ruling out the opportunity of bringing in an outstanding player.
