World Cup 2014: Potential All-Star XI (4)

Centre-back: Raphael Varane | France (Real Madrid)

Raphael Varane is easily the best young centre-back in Europe, but will he shine on the international stage with France at this summer’s World Cup finals?

It must be remembered that the Real Madrid starlet is still only 20 - although he will have turned 21 by the time the first match of the finals kicks off in June - with just five international caps to his name.

However, the 6ft 3in defender has taken everything in his stride so far, and is unlikely to be overawed by the prospect of playing in the World Cup. Instead, he’ll relish it and thrive under the pressure.

Good performances against Honduras, Switzerland and Ecuador will set him up nicely for the knockout rounds.
