Zaha, who is currently on loan with Cardiff City, posted the picture using the photo-sharing application on Tuesday morning, along with the comment: “Got to meet a legend with my bro .. #Pires”.
However, this attracted negative comments, with one user even asking Zaha: “R u a wasteman fam. Pires hated Man Utd more than anyone. Why the f*** are you Biggin him up”.
Zaha revealed in an interview last year that he is a boyhood Arsenal fan, so the fact he describes Pires as a legend should come as little surprise. The former France international was one of the Gunners star performers when the young Zaha was honing his skills round the local parks of London, and was a key member of the iconic “Invincibles” side of 2003/04.
Despite his love for Arsenal, Zaha admitted that he could not turn down a £15m move to Manchester United when the Red Devils came calling for his services in January 2013. The 21-year-old was at Crystal Palace at that stage, and returned to the Eagles until the end of the 2012/13 campaign, helping them secure promotion to the Premier League.
"It was always Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal in terms of where I could be going," Zaha told The Sun last year. “I have always supported Arsenal. I did not expect United to come in but they did. Arsenal are a good team but United are one of the best in the world."
However, Zaha has endured a frustrating debut campaign at Old Trafford, making just two Premier League appearances before being sent on loan to Cardiff. Arsenal, meanwhile, are still in contention to win their first league title since 2004.
