The Tampa Bay Rays will be without their pitcher Alex Colome for the first 50 games of the season after he was hit with a drugs ban, reports ESPN.

Colome, 25, tested positive for Boldenone, a banned steroid used primarily to treat horses, the commissioner's office confirmed on Monday.

"We were disappointed to learn of Alex Colome's violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program,'' the Rays said in a statement.

"We fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing substances from our game.''

Colome went 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in threes starts for the Rays in his rookie season last year. He was later optioned to Triple-A Durham of the International League on March 8.

The Dominican Republic native broke into the major leagues last season, beating the Miami Marlins on his debut in May. He went on to make starts against the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers before his season came to an end with an injury to his pitching elbow.

The 25-year-old was set to be part of the rotation this season as offseason elbow surgery will keep right-hander Jeremy Hellickson out until May.

Colome is the next player to receive a drugs related ban following the season-long suspension of Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.
