There are a number of ways in which an anchor can be analogised, some positive and some negative. The positive stance would be to say a player is like an anchor as they provide stability and safety when things are not going well, a source of reliance.
A not so positive way would be to suggest a player is like an anchor because they halt movement and can be a hindrance to progress. It could be argued that all those who are seen in such a positive light, will eventually become the other.
'What are you on about GMS?' We hear you ask. Well, we are on a roundabout way to looking at certain players in the more prominent Premier League sides that have become something of a burden rather than actively aiding their sides. We were thinking about how certain players who may have once been key to their respective clubs successes, but are now actually the barrier between those clubs and moving up a level.
These are the names that need to be either going out the door this summer or accepting a lesser role for an eventual phasing out. Players that are occupying places in their team that are required to change for the sakes of evolution or revolution, however well loved they are by fans.
We have picked out six players, one each from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea because, whether you like it or not, they are either the most successful or high-profile clubs in the Premier League.
