The incredible capitulation witnessed at Manchester United this season is irrefutable evidence of the influence one individual can have at a football club.

Though it’s true that the sport is centred around the values of team-work and places a strong emphasis on a collective pulling in the same direction, sometimes the overriding presence of one character can become the dominant force. And if anything the idea of one man having complete control over a club is one that’s becoming increasingly accepted in the modern game.

As the amount of money in football continues to grow it’s more often than not those who can flash the cash that have the final say on things. When you take into account that player power and ego-crazed managers are far from a thing of the past, the scenario becomes incredibly interesting.
