We last saw Mexico play at a major tournament only a year ago in the Confederations cup but I imagine Mexicans would want to forget that ever happened as they did not even make it past the group stage.

It seems as though they may have to accept the fact that, like the Confederations Cup, they may not make it past the group stage in this major tournament either. This will surely be a hard pill for some Mexicans to swallow as only four years ago at the previous World Cup they were considered the strongest CONCACAF team.

Although it seems likely they will fail once again, stranger things have happened and they could secure a place in second. This is unlikely for me as I believe Croatia have the stronger squad when being compared to Mexico. We may see a repeat of the 2010 World Cup campaign for Mexico, when they had an even tougher job progressing with both Uruguay and France, but still managed to get out of their group.

The only team I really see Mexico beating in their group however is Cameroon. Both Croatia and Brazil have better squads, and a draw with Croatia may be the best Mexico can hope for.

Even if Mexico do beat all the odds and get to the last 16 their celebrations will be short lived as they will more then likely be drawn with the current World Cup holders Spain where they will surely be eliminated.
