Dnipro midfielder Jaba Kankava heroically saved the life of Dynamo Kiev captain Oleg Gusev during their Ukrainian Premier League encounter on Sunday.

Gusev was knocked unconscious while challenging for the ball with Dnipro goalkeeper Denys Boyko - and the severity of the blow caused him to swallow his own tongue.

Quick as a flash Kankava intervened, attempting to prise open his opponent's jaw in order to stop him from choking before putting him on his side in the recovery position. The 30-year-old can be seen jolting back to life son after Kankava's life-saving actions.

Medical staff quickly arrived on the scene to come to Gusev's rescue - but Kankava's actions undoubtedly helped avoid a potential disaster.

Unfortunately for the Dnipro ace he got a nasty-looking bite on the hand for his troubles - but he did receive the thanks of all the Kiev players afterwards.

The incident bears an uncanny similarity to the one which saw Chelsea captain John Terry swallow his tongue after being knocked conscious in the 2007 League Cup final. Then, Arsenal physio Gary Lewin came to the rescue.

Dnipro went on to claim a 2-0 win over Dynamo Kiev thanks to two goals from Matheus Nascimento.
