The Detroit Red Wings received two critical points in a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning last night.
David Legwand had a goal and an assist to help lift the Wings into seventh place. Jonas Gustavsson made 26 saves on the night as well. The Lightning tried to mount a comeback through a late goal by Sami Salo, but just ran out of time.
This is the time period where hockey is most interesting in my opinion. You’ve got teams fighting for home ice advantage in their upcoming playoff campaigns on one side.
And then you’ve got teams still trying to fight their way into a playoff position on the other. These two situations always bring out some of the most exciting hockey games of the season.
For the Detroit Red Wings the battle to keep their playoff spot is far from over. The Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals are still right behind them. So, a loss could easily turn out to be the difference between an early off season and a playoff campaign.
And Detroit’s next game is against the first place Boston Bruins on Wednesday. And taking away any points from Boston this late in the season will be a tough task. However, it’s important to remember that the Wings have been able to hold their current position without the aid of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.
If Jimmy Howard and Jonas Gustavsson can steal a few more points, the Wings will be in good shape. Also, if Gustov Nyquist, Darren Helm and Tomas Tatar continue to score goals, the Wings will be fine.
I believe this next game against Boston will be a turning point for the Detroit Red Wings. If they win, I believe the momentum from that win will boost them enough to continue winning.
If they lose it could all be over. Because let’s face it if Detroit have to face Boston in the playoffs, which may happen regardless, it could be a quick exit for the Wings this year. I believe the Detroit Red Wings will be in the playoffs this year.
This team has been in many of these types of situations, and have come out on top. They just need to continue playing the same desperate style hockey. This team has plenty of veteran players like Daniel Alfredsson and Johan Frazen to help settle the nerves in the dressing room.
One thing is certain, good goaltending will be required in this next game against Boston. I sure hope Jimmy Howard or Jonas Gustavsson will be prepared to face a lot of shots.
Because even though the Bruins have already clinched their division, they’ll want to stop any teams from gaining any momentum right before the playoffs. It’s going to be a very exciting game and I can’t wait to see which goalie will steal the win for their team on Wednesday.
