In partnership with the NFL in the UK

Matthew Stafford's play to improve after engagement

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford may have just made his best off-season decision with the announcement of his engagement to Kelly Hall.

The decision for the couple to get married was announced today, and this news can only be positive news for both Stafford, the Lions organisation and its fans.

Stafford has played five seasons in the NFL now and his quality as a passer is almost unrivalled. He can make all the throws, but questions marks remain over his temperament and clutch play ability.

In a funny way this engagement might just be the perfect tonic to make those clutch moment blues fade away.

Stafford has one season of passing over 5,000 yards in the NFL, followed by two years of yardage close to those figures.

That has been helped by the strong play of premier wide-out Calvin Johnson, and now he even has the quality skills of former Seattle WR Golden Tate to help out.

But the kicker could be the relaxed feelings that he gets from having his love life settled that may provide his ultimate inspiration.

A happy off the field situation could mean a happy on field situation, which could mean an awesome 2014 for the Lions.
