Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs “showed his age” against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, according to respected French publication L’Equipe, who gave the veteran midfielder an unflattering 3/10 rating for his disappointing 45-minute display.
The 40-year-old was substituted at half-time after picking up a groin injury, but may have been withdrawn regardless by United boss David Moyes. The former Wales international struggled against Bayern Munich’s fluid three-man midfield and, as expected, was left chasing shadows for much of the first half.
Giggs deservedly received praise for his performance in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 tie against Greek champions Olymapikos, in which he was afforded time and space to work his magic, but looked well off the pace against the reigning European champions.
Manchester United’s record appearance holder wasn’t the only player who found it tough against Pep Guardiola’s side, but the Red Devils still managed to secure an unexpected 1-1 draw, which leaves them in with a chance of progressing to the Champions League semi-finals.
Despite Tuesday night’s result, Manchester United are still the rank outsiders to win this season’s Champions League, with the leading bookmakers pricing them between 33 and 40/1 to lift the trophy in Lisbon this May.
Bayern Munich have a precious away goal, thanks to Bastian Schweinsteiger’s excellent equaliser, which means Manchester United must score at the Allianz Arena to stand any hope of advancing to the last four.
