Arsenal are weighing up a move for Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic after giving up on Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa, reports the Daily Mail.
Arsene Wenger has had his scouting team searching the globe for potential summer recruits, specifically in the striker department.
Currently Arsenal have only one proven goal scorer in Olivier Giroud, who himself has struggled at times this season, especially against the bigger teams.
Wenger is keen to introduce more proven quality into the Arsenal line-up and knows a quality striker could be all that stands between them and a Premier League title.
One striker Wenger was thought to be interested in signing was Diego Costa, who has been sensational for Atletico Madrid this season. Costa has scored 25 goals in La LIga, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Golden Boot.
His Atletico contract allows him to be bought for £32m, sparking interest from a number of clubs. But, although Wenger is thought to have as much as £100m to spend this summer, he is resigned to the fact that the Brazilian-born forward will sign for rivals Chelsea.
Despite having Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto'o and Romelu Lukaku on the books, Jose Mourinho has constantly claimed not to have a good enough striker in his Chelsea team.
As a result, Mourinho moved quickly to seal a deal for Costa and, according to some media outlets, is close to agreeing terms with Atletico for his transfer.
Wenger believes chasing Costa is futile, as the player is already set on a move to Stamford Bridge and has forced him to consider Bayern Munich star Mandzukic instead.
Mandzukic has been impressive for Bayern this season, scoring 17 goals in the Bundesliga and leading the race for the Golden Boot. However, with just one year left on his contract and Robert Lewandowski set to sign in the summer, Mandzukic could be forced to find a new club or face a season on the bench.
He has already struggled to get into Pep Guardiola's team at times as the former-Barcelona manager has preferred using Thomas Muller in the famed false No.9 position instead.
Lewandowski could shut Mandzukic out of the team altogether and it for that reason he has yet to agree a contract extension. A good bid from Arsenal could tempt Bayern into a sale, who risk losing Mandzukic for nothing next summer if they refuse.
