Manchester United are set to test Southampton's resolve with a huge summer bid for two of their biggest stars, reports suggest.
According to talkSPORT, the Premier League champions are plotting a double swoop worth a whopping £50 million for England duo Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw.
The pair have each enjoyed immensely successful seasons at St. Mary's under the excellent management of Mauricio Pochettino and will be looking to cement their places in Roy Hodgson's squad for the World Cup in Brazil.
The news that Manchester United - who are expected to hand manager David Moyes a sizable transfer kitty this summer in order for the struggling Scot to improve his squad at Old Trafford - are lining up such a move for Lallana and Shaw is likely to disappoint Chelsea, who have been linked with respective moves of their own for both players in recent weeks.
Indeed, whether Jose Mourinho and Chelsea - whose bid for a Premier League/Champions League double has suffered consecutive blows with away defeats to Crystal Palace and Paris Saint-Germain in recent days - will now be cajoled into preparing a similar offer of their own remains to be seen.
Southampton will inevitably not want to part with two players who have proved so impressive of late, yet you would have to imagine a bid of £50 million would sorely tempt them into cashing in.
It is certainly not difficult to see how both Lallana and Shaw could improve the respective lineups of Manchester United and Chelsea, either.
18-year-old Shaw - who made his senior debut for England during the 1-0 friendly win over Denmark at Wembley last month - would presumably prove a capable successor to Patrice Evra or Ashley Cole, while Lallana's guile, creativity and ability in possession could easily be utlilised to devastating effect.
