Manchester United duo in contention to face Newcastle

Manchester United boss David Moyes has been given a major fitness boost ahead of what could be a crucial week for the Scotsman.

Moyes had a major selection headache on Tuesday as he was unable to call on the services of Chris Smalling, Rafael and Jonny Evans.

The Scotsman was forced into playing Phil Jones at right-back at the start of the game and then moved the defender to left-back during the final stages of the match, as Alex Buttner was forced off injured.

However Moyes' fortunes have changed for the better as he revealed earlier today that Evans and Smalling are now back in contention to play at the weekend.

The Manchester United manager, speaking ahead of his side's match against Newcastle, said on Smalling and Evans: "We have got Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling back in training. That helps us."

News of their return will give Moyes' side a timely boost ahead of their crucial second leg encounter against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Moyes may choose to rest Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on Saturday, as the duo impressed against Bayern Munich in midweek - so are expected to start against the recently-crowned German champions Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
