Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has without question cost his side in big matches with disappointing lapses in concentration and a lack of discipline, as shown perfectly by a 19th career red card against Barcelona in the decisive incident of a pulsating clash with Barcelona last month.

Ramos has all the attributes of a top defender, but lets himself down just when it matters most, a trait Madrid can ill-afford at the centre of defence when you consider he often starts alongside fellow hot-head Pepe.

The 28-year-old has French potential superstar Raphael Varane for competition and needs to show a vast improvement urgently to keep his prized place in the starting XI at the Bernabeu.
