India were rightly tagged as the favourites before the World Twenty20 tournament started in Bangladesh, and throughout the tournament they have shown their class and justified that position. Their excellent victory over South Africa will give them every confidence going into the final on Sunday against Sri Lanka.
Virat Kohli was the inspiration behind their six wicket semi-final win with a dazzling innings of 72 from only 44 balls. The 23 year old is already a star in India and around the World and if Indians were looking for a cricketer to take over from the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Raul Dravid then look no further.
South Africa did set India a challenging target of 172 after Faf Du Plessis (58) and JP Duminy (45) produced two very good innings. South Africa could have added more but for an excellent spell of bowling from Ravichandran Ashwin (3-22).
However, throughout India's chase they remained composed, largely due to Kohli, and produced a clinical display of batting against a high class bowling attack that will serve them well in the Final on Sunday. Kohli hit the winning runs from the first ball of the final over with non-striker Dhoni looking on impressively.
Interestingly Dhoni has only faced one ball during the tournament so far. He may yet have a role to play with the bat on Sunday though.
India's opponents on Sunday, Sri Lanka, will have been impressed by what they have witnessed. Mentally Sri Lanka need to overcome their own hurdle as they have a recent record of falling at the last hurdle in major competitions since they won the 1999 50 over World Cup. Sri Lanka have never won the Twenty20 competition and face India in a repeat of the 2011 final in the same competition. India also won that game.
Sri Lanka do pose a threat and India will not take them lightly. Star players such as Lasith Malinga and Tillakaratne Dilshan must not be underestimated. Sri Lanka will be especially keen to give veterans Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara the perfect send-off in their final games before T20 international retirement.
India will be wary and rightly so but Sri Lanka know they have a huge fight on their hands against a star-studded line-up if they are to win their first T20 crown.
Who will bet against Virat Kohli having another huge impact in the Final?
