Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is expected to return to full fitness in time to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Rooney was forced into sitting out Manchester United's convincing 4-0 win against Newcastle at the weekend due to a knock he picked up in last Tuesday's draw against the German champions.

David Moyes said Rooney was struggling to make Manchester United's crucial second leg tie against the current Champions League holders with a bruised toe, however the Daily Mail believe the Red Devils star will return for Wednesday's tie in Munich.

Rooney did not travel with the rest of the Manchester United squad to the north-east as he instead worked on trying to heal his minor injury.

The 28-year-old was instead working on his fitness at Manchester United's Aon training complex.

Javier Hernandez, who played the full 90 minutes against Newcastle, could get the nod to start upfront if Rooney is ruled out of his side's quarter-final clash.

Bayern Munich on the other hand will be without the suspended Javi Martinez and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
