Norwich City’s decision to part company with manager Chris Hughton with just five games of the Premier League season to play has left many Canary fans baffled.

Hughton, who replaced Paul Lambert in the summer of 2012, has struggled ever since his arrival and has paid the price for his side constantly flirting with the relegation zone over the course of a turbulent season.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Carrow Road to fellow relegation candidates West Bromwich Albion was the final straw, and led the board to appoint former player and FA youth-cup winning coach Neil Adams in his place.

Despite guiding Norwich to 11th place last term, his inability to coax the best out of summer signings such as Gary Hooper and Ricky van Wolfswinkel has been central to the failings that have led to the board to wield the axe after four defeats from their last six games.

Particularly mystifying is the decision not to wait until after next weekend’s mammoth clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage, a match where three points would move them agonisingly close to safety.

Adams’ appointment is similar to Tim Sherwood’s at Tottenham, but as his tenure has proved the decision to promote internally does not guarantee results.

After initially thriving, the North London side have regressed rather than improved as the season has gone on, leading to questions over his future after less than six months in the job.

Malky Mackay will surely appeal once his dispute with former club Cardiff City is settled, but for now Canary fans will be praying Adams can do enough to guarantee Premier League football for another season.
