With a fight to hold onto second in Ligue 1, are Monaco really that good, in their first season back in Ligue 1 since 2011 but more importantly their first season since being taken over in December 2011.

After sweeping to the Ligue 2 title in 2012/13, this season they were expected to basically buy the best players and challenge PSG for the title, this they have managed to do in a sense, but too many draws and losses to St Etienne and Evian lately have not helped their cause plus Radamel Falcao's injury has dented them further.

However, what has to be noted here is that Monaco have not exactly bought world-class players, yes Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez are solid international players, I wouldn't have them top of my list of players to buy, while Eric Abidal, Ricardo Carvalho, Dimitar Berbatov and Jeremy Toulalan are all players who have had great careers and now in their twilights, are not players who are going to help win you a title.

The team in essence is still a strong Ligue 2 influence with players not worthy of being at the 2nd best team in France this season. While youngsters such as Lucas Ocampos and Geoffrey Kondogbia just may however be the future and could be long-term prospects for the team.

Either way, this is a team in essence which is in a transition period, with the lure of big wages for players, it may be expected next season that they buy more high calibre players, to try and eradicate the weak links, while look at becoming a team that can go the whole season for the title.

Who they go for exactly is uncertain at the moment, but it could be a case also of buying players looking for redemption, such as Fernando Torres, Nani, Javier Hernadez to name a few.

While it's tough to still say if they will remain in second, they are in a fight for the remaining six games of the season but going on this season's basis, they will look to improve significantly to ensure that they can be title contenders next season.
