Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has revealed he was convinced to join Toronto FC by Canadian rapper Drake.
Defoe reportedly had a number of options in the MLS but decided to join Toronto FC following a phone call from Drake.
The Canadian, who was born in Toronto, is a big fan of the football club as well as the state's NBA side - the Toronto Raptors.
Defoe, speaking to George Stroumboulopoulos on CBC, revealed he thought his former Tottenham teammates were pretending to be Drake.
"I thought it was a wind up. I thought it was one of the players at Tottenham just trying to wind me up.
"I played it cool by leaving it for a bit and then I asked him a few questions and I was like wow.
"He's a gifted guy - so it was amazing to get the phone call."
Defoe, who is still hoping to be named in Roy Hodgson's 23-man England squad, has scored three goals in three games since moving to the MLS.
