As Real Madrid appear Champions League semi-final certainties, they will shudder when recalling their comprehensive defeat the last time they made the last four.

Their previous visit to Dortmund was a disaster. Robert Lewandowksi netted an amazing four goals to condemn the then La Liga champions to a massive first-leg deficit they were unable to overturn in Madrid.

Almost a year later, Jurgen Klopp's side are at a three-goal disadvantage. Similarly to Real, they have to hope for a footballing miracle to reach the next stage of the most high-profile club competition in Europe.

They are helped by Lewandowski's return from suspension and his team-mates need a repeat of his clinical finishing in last season's special performance,

And they must do without the midfield trio of IIkay Gundogan, Sven Bender and Sebastian Kehl. Nuri Sahin, the former Liverpool loanee, will not be fully-fit so may also miss out.

Goalkeeper and captain Roman Weidenfeller could be in the stands too, after his hand injury caused him to watch the weekend's win against Wolfsburg.

Carlo Ancelotti has fewer concerns, with a healthy lead and no Dortmund away goal although the return of striking sensation Cristiano Ronaldo is not definite.

Even without 2014's Ballon d'Or winner, the nine-time European winners thrashed Real Sociedad 4-0 away with Gareth Bale scoring his fourth goal in three games.

Full-backs Alvaro Arbeloa and Marcelo are unavailable.

Ronaldo's absence would hamper the Spanish team's hopes of a win on the night, but they have such attacking depth either Angel Di Maria or Isco could excel on the left.

If Dortmund reach the next round for the second successive year, it will be regarded as one of the great European comebacks, even without Ronaldo on the pitch.

But they still have to stop the in-form Bale and Co.

Predicted Real Madrid team: Casillas; Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe, Coentrao; Alonso, Modric, Di Maria; Bale, Isco; Benzema.

Predicted score: Dortmund 2-2 Real Madrid
