The match against Portland Timbers eventually ended 4-4, and it is clear that Dempsey’s goals were crucial in keeping Sounders in the game.
The Timbers actually went ahead twice in the game, only for Sounders to respond on both occasions.
Two of Dempsey’s goals came late on, with the American scoring in both the 85th and 87th minute.
It was certainly an inspirational performance, given that Dempsey has only recently returned from a poor loan return to former club Fulham in the English Premier League.
Indeed, the former Tottenham Hotspur player had never scored a hat trick in his MLS career, stretching back to his New England Revolution days.
Seattle currently sit in 5th in the Western Conference, only one point off second place, but six points behind leaders FC Dallas, who have built up a significant gap from second-placed Real Salt Lake.
The club’s current league position would get them into the play-offs, but – sitting only two points ahead of sixth-placed Chivas USA – fans and players alike will be eager to improve further after only five weeks of the season.
Certainly, Dempsey is crucial to Seattle’s hopes this season and he will undoubtedly play a major role as the season progresses.
If the player continues to play in the way that he did in the previous game against The Timbers, then player of the week will not be the only award that he wins this season.
