Liverpool paid Ajax £22.8m for Suarez’s services - a fee which now looks an absolute bargain - but his international teammate Forlan has admitted he attempted to convince the livewire forward to put pen-to-paper on a deal with the Reds’ fierce Premier League rivals.
Forlan also revealed that Suarez, despite his reputation, is a great guy away from the pitch.
“We’re close and we get on well,” Forlan was quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo. “He’s polite and keen to learn, always asking me questions and for advice. I like how he feels he can turn to me in good and bad moments.
“Like when Liverpool made him an offer. Of course, I told him he should join Manchester United, but I also spoke well of Liverpool and their history.
“I told him how, after I’d scored for Atletico at Anfield to knock them out of the Europa League, their fans applauded me.”
Forlan, who failed to shine in the Premier League before flourishing in Spain with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, also believes that Suarez is happy playing for the Merseyside outfit - despite his demands to leave Anfield last summer.
“He loves playing at Liverpool. He likes the Premier League – and the fans love him because he’s a striker’s striker,” Forlan added. “He still chases everything, like Wayne Rooney used to before he moved deeper, and he’s learned from his mistakes. We all make them.”
Suarez, 27, has been in magnificent form this season - scoring 29 Premier League goals in 28 matches, which have helped Liverpool amass a two-point lead at the top of the table with five games of the campaign left to play.
But should he have tried to join Manchester United over Liverpool in 2011? Have your say in the comments section below.
