Chelsea have been picked to face Atletico Madrid in today's Champions League semi-final draw, with destiny conspiring to pit the Blues against loan star Thibaut Courtois in the final four of Europe's elite club competition.
Holders Bayern Munich face a two-legged tie with Real Madrid in a massive showdown of continental giants, but throw the contract conundrum surrounding Courtois into the mix and Chelsea's clash with Atletico the tie that will set the news agenda ahead of the final four.
Courtois is believed to have a clause in his contract that would force Atletico to pay €2.5m per appearances against the Blues during the two-legged tie, although UEFA released a strongly worded statement insisting that they will not recognise any agreement of that nature for such a prestigious fixture.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho will take his side to the Vicente Calderon for the first leg on April 22nd or 23rd, with the return leg at Stamford Bridge a week later.
In the other tie Bayern and Madrid will lock horns for the first time since contesting the semi-final in 2012, a tie which the German champions edged in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Bayern will be marginal favourites to earn a place in a third straight Champions League final, although Madrid definitely have the firepower to expose any defensive deficiencies in Pep Guardiola's ranks.
