Wayne Rooney has wished Rory McIlroy the best of luck for this year's Masters and believes the Irishman can go on to win the tournament.

Rooney, who himself is a keen golfer, gave McIlroy the message via his Official Facebook page

He said: "Looking forward to watching the rest of 'The Masters' this week. Good luck to Rory McIlroy, I reckon you can win it this year!"

The Manchester United striker posted a photo of him and McIlroy (see above) alongside the message to wish the 24-year-old well.

The pair are friends outside of their sporting lives, but have previously been seen playing football and golf in a promotional advert for Nike Ordem football.

28-year-old Rooney will be looking ahead to United's Premier League tie away to Everton on Sunday, following getting knocked out of the Champions League last night after losing 3-1 to Bayern Munich.

McIlroy is looking to win a third major and is currently in 13th position, with American Bill Haas leading the way at the Augusta National.
