Brendan Shanahan was named the Toronto Maple Leafs president on Friday, with the former Sheriff of the NHL’s Department of safety not taking long to make the decision.
The move comes shortly after the Leafs were eliminated from playoff contention in a loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. There has been much discussion and debate as to whether this was the right move for Shanahan and the Maple Leafs.
If nothing else it will provide the organization with some hope, excitement and some new ideas going forward. Still, there are many who question Shanahan’s lack of experience in this position. I believe Shanahan is the right man for the job.
The man has been around the game of hockey long enough to be able to take on this new challenge quite easily in my opinion. I don’t believe it will take him long to settle into his new position. He’s used to having to make tough decisions thanks to his old job.
More importantly, he’s used to being under a lot of pressure and having to take criticism for some of his decisions. I believe he will be quite an asset for the Leaf’s players. He’ll be able to utilize his past experiences both on and off the ice to boost the confidence of the entire organization.
After all, we’re talking about a guy who has won three Stanley Cups. He’s an Olympic Gold medalist and tallied an impressive 656 goals throughout his NHL career. It is because of this incredible resume that Brendan Shanahan was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame last year. Based on all this, I would say that the Toronto Maple Leafs are very fortunate to be able to have Shanahan accept this position. The question now becomes, how long will it take before he to starts to make changes within the organization.
I don’t believe it will take very long at all, however it may be a little awkward at first because the Maple Leafs have been given several suspensions over this past season.
Regardless, Shanahan gets formerly introduced as club president on Monday. I’m not sure this type of move was required. But I’m certainly interested on what kind of impact this move will have on the organization.
One thing is certain; it’s going to be a very long and stressful off season for Shanahan.
