Werder Bremen star volleys into his own goal

Werder Bremen striker Nils Petersen was the talk of the terraces in Germany this weekend after he scored one of the most bizarre own goals in Bundesliga history.

With just five minutes on the clock at the Coface Arena on Saturday, the 25-year-old put through his own net with a brilliant first-time volley from a corner to set Mainz 05 on their way to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Petersen's side-footed effort from eight yards out looped back towards the Werder Bremen goal, nestling perfectly in the top corner after evading the helpless Raphael Wolf.

The peculiar shot past his own goalkeeper really has to be seen to be believed, and thanks to the Bundesliga's official YouTube channel you can do just that!

Watch highlights of the hilarious own goal in the video above - and feel free to share other classic examples of calamitous defending in the comment box provided!
