It's not often we see Manchester City lose, but in Sunday's pivotal match with both sides looking for the Premier League title, it was Brendan Rodgers' side who prevailed.

So, with that in mind, Ollie Gentle has taken the liberty of bringing to you the player ratings of both teams. See if you agree.

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet - A composed display from the Belgian, although appeared shaky at times and had to be redeemed by his defence. Made some fair saves late on in the match. 7

Glen Johnson - Can feel quite hard done by, as the own goal was far from his fault. Coped well defensively, but his attacking threat was somewhat disjointed. 7

Mamadou Sakho - A reasonable performance from the 24-year-old, who looked anxious at times. 6

Martin Skrtel - A rock at the back, and definitely proved his worth with a goal, along with a fine defensive performance. Kept Edin Dzeko at bay extremely well. 8

Jon Flanagan - The youngster looked quite capable in dealing with City's threat early on, but perhaps struggled later when Milner entered the frame. A good show though overall. 7

Steven Gerrard - In his new role Gerrard was determined to get the win. His tracking back, along with his crunching tackles really helped Liverpool push on to win. Brilliant once again from Gerrard. 9

Jordan Henderson - Surprisingly very quiet, and was perhaps lacklustre for large parts of the match. A poor tackle saw him sent off late on. 6

Phillipe Coutinho - Throughout the game was excellent and made some brilliant tackles to set up some neat attacking breaks for Liverpool. Got a fantastic goal at the end after a mistake from Kompany. 9

Raheem Sterling - Looked bright in the first half, and was difficult for the City defence to handle ultimately grabbing the first goal. Showed his talent throughout the match. 8

Luis Suarez - Was a constant threat throughout the game, although was lucky to stay on the pitch after getting in too many altercations with the Manchester City players. 7

Daniel Sturridge - Not his best performance. The England international gave the ball away cheaply before he was subbed off with an injury. 6

Subs: Allen - 7, Lucas - 7, Moses - 5

Manchester City

Joe Hart - Saved a few shots spectacularly, but some would blame him for the goals that did go in. Could have been worse though for England's number one. 6

Pablo Zabaleta Again looked off of the boil, and was never particularly an addition to the City attack. Solid in defence, but usually better. 5

Vincent Kompany - Given a torrid time by the Liverpool attack and struggled throughout. Was far from his usual self, and his major mistake sealed the win for the Reds. 4

Martin Demichelis Another who far from impressed, the pace of the Liverpool attack left him chasing shadows for the majority. Was better defensively than Kompany though. 5

Gael Clichy - Played instead of Kolarov, but looked pretty rusty. Got forward at every opportunity, but failed really to prove his worth the the City line-up. Looked more confident in the second half by far. 6

Yaya Toure - Struggled with the pace of Liverpool's attacks and was forced off within 20 minutes due to injury. Worrying signs for City's top goalscorer. 5

Fernandinho - Got more and more into the game as it wore on, but the damage had already been done in the first half. Lost his partner Toure, and this somehow improved his game somewhat. 7

Jesus Navas - Looked out of the game, and ultimately never flew past the Liverpool defence. Was taken off in the second half marking a bad day at the office for the Spaniard. 6

David Silva - Ineffective in the first half, but brightened up in the second when he found more space. Scored himself and assisted in the other. City's brightest player by far. 8

Edin Dzeko - Was unlucky not to get a penalty, but apart from that he was hardly in the game at all. Rightly replaced by Aguero with 20 minutes left, but it was too late to do any damage. 5

Subs: Aguero - 5, Garcia - 6, Milner - 7
