Sometimes MLB ball boys (and girls), in their eagerness to do a good job, get a little too involved in the action.
And Sunday night in Baltimore, during the game between the Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays, was a prime example of such an incident.
An over-excited Orioles ball girl picked up what she thought was a foul ball, only to discover to her embarrassment the play was fair and the ball was live.
The Blue Jays’ Edwin Encarnacion hit the ball straight down the third base line and it was correctly judged to have stayed just inside the infield before spinning over the foul line.
Toronto were awarded a ground-rule double which moved Encarnacion to second and team mate Adam Lind to third. The pair went on to complete their scores in the Blue Jays' 11-3 thumping off the Orioles.
Before the ball girl’s error occurred at the top of the fourth innings, the sides were level with one run each.
But Orioles commentator Gary Thorne refused to blame the young fan and instead commended her ball-taking skills.
Maybe Thorne thought Orioles needed someone like her to stop them sinking to their seventh defeat of the season.
