Liverpool could land West Ham star Mohamed Diame this summer, after the midfielder reiterated his desire to move to a top six club at the end of this season.
The Senegalese international has long been linked with a switch to Anfield, but the notion of a transfer has never really been taken too seriously. However now the Independent reports that Diame himself has played up the prospect of an end of season move, and that the player himself believes he is still wanted by Brendan Rodgers.
“Two years ago I wanted to join a team with ambitions,” said Diame.
“Overall, my season has been okay, although I think it is not up to last season. I started badly, but gradually I got my bearings.
“Liverpool? I can't tell you if I will be a Liverpool player next season. But I think my name is still on their wanted list.
“I don't hide it, I'm ambitious and I want to join a top-six side. I am 26 years old and it's time to take that step.”
Though there has been no official price-tag put on Diame’s head yet, it’s unlikely that Sam Allardyce will let him leave on the cheap due to the importance he has in the West Ham squad. Whilst many feel that his performances this year have paled in comparison to the dominating displays he showcased last campaign, there’s no question that he would add bite to Liverpool’s midfield.
Of course Rodgers may set his sights higher than Diame if he manages to steer his side to the Premier League title. Following a famous 3-2 victory at home over Manchester City yesterday the Reds sit at the summit of English football, and will clinch the title if they can manage to win their remaining games.
