Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young have received fines and been warned over their future conduct after partying in the hours following Manchester United’s defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.
The England trio were photographed enjoying a night out in Manchester city centre into the early hours of last Friday morning - a day after the team crashed out of Europe’s premier club competition following a 3-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena.
United boss David Moyes called the three players in for talks at Carrington on Monday, according to the Daily Mail, before making them do extra training away from the first-team squad. And, even though the Red Devils have an 11-day break between matches, it’s reported that Moyes has fined the trio either one or two weeks’ wages.
Manchester United have endured an awful campaign - their worst of the Premier League era - and seeing the players partying is unlikely to have gone down well with supporters. It certainly didn’t go down well with Moyes, who is attempting to end the season with Europa League qualification safely secured for next season.
As things stand. United are poised to miss out on European football completely. The Red Devils currently find themselves three points behind sixth-placed Tottenham with five matches remaining.
Moyes, however, will have money to revamp his beleaguered squad this summer - but could he now be convinced to sell one of the punished trio?
Cleverley was poised to be offered a new contract, much to the bemusement of fans, while Young has failed to showcase his class on a regular basis since arriving from Aston Villa in 2011.
Welbeck, meanwhile, will almost certainly still be a Manchester United player come the start of the 2014/15 campaign.
