Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is planning to make Hamburg wonderkid Hakan Calhanoglou his latest acquisition from the continent and will test the Bundesliga side's resolve with a €16m offer.

Mourinho has been keeping a close check on the 20-year-old, who can operate in a variety of advanced attacking position and has huge potential to improve after standing out for Hamburg in a dismal campaign for the German giants.

Calhanoglou has been courted by Arsenal and Liverpool over the last two months, but Turkish newspaper Gazeta Karsi are reported by AS to have discovered that Blues boss Mourinho will sanction a strong offer this summer to beat off stiff competition for the starlet's signature.

Champions League semi-final opponents Atletico Madrid also view the youngster as an affordable addition to their talented squad, with Los Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone able to offer Champions League football and consistent first-team opportunities.

Mourinho has a strong track record of securing Europe's top young talent though and is making a concerted drive to build for the long-term at Stamford Bridge, proven by the additions of Nemanja Matic and Kurt Zouma in January.

The Blues boss has to sell before he can implement a planned recruitment drive, but Calhanoglou is now top of the that transfer shortlist along with the addition of a star centre forward.
