Spain underlined their ability to dominate on the red dirt when four Spaniards battled it out for the two ATP titles in Casablanca and Houston this week as the opening exchanges of the clay court season got underway.

In Casablanca, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez put his bad run of losing in the opening round of his last three tournaments behind him when he defeated compatriot Marcel Granollers, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to lift his third ATP Tour title at the Grand Prix Hassan II.

Garcia-Lopez had previously beaten Granollers at the same tournament four years ago and the victory yesterday gave the Spaniard his first title since he won the PTT Thailand Open in 2010.

In Houston, Fernando Verdasco and Nicolas Almagro battled it out in another all Spanish affair for the US Clay Court Championship.

In a battle of the nearly men, Verdasco was looking to end a streak of six losing finals while Almagro had been on the end of four consecutive loses in tour finals.

However it was Verdasco that eased to a 6-3, 7-6 victory for his sixth ATP Tour title from 19 finals.

Verdasco also improved his lifetime to 7-3 against his opponent who dropped to 12-9 in Tour finals.

The clay court season now moves to the Principaity of Monte-Carlo for the Rolex Masters featuring Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
